Racing across the Eastern Seaboard
We left Boston with a target destination of Virginia. We were headed to Shenandoah National Park. This was one of our biggest driving days, but still retained a couple highlights: a walking tour of Providence, RI, and a stop at Andy’s now favorite brewery, Dogfishhead. That’s right, only one month on the East Coast and Leah and Andy both found favorite breweries surprisingly thousands of miles away from the purported beer capital of Portland, Oregon.
A highlight of the drive, and a fun pit stop, was Providence Rhode Island. We planned for a quick visit after leaving Massachusetts, and found a parking spot next to Brown University. Our stroll involved a fun walk through a nice waterfront park. The citwas nice enough to provide an entourage for our walk, with a 5k race that happened to coincide with a portion of our city stroll. We capped off the short visit with desert for breakfast; we shared an ice cream capped, whip cream layered, peach spread waffle.
It required a two hour detour to stop in Milton, Delaware, but it was well worth it. It was the final stop of the day before we headed to Virginia and was a much needed stop after driving through seven states, and surviving a stressful drive through Connecticut, New York and New Jersey in peak rush hour. Following traffic with a buffer of less than a car length, and weaving through traffic at 60+ mph is not a simple feat when towing a trailer with a full size truck!
Dogfishhead Brewery is definitely a place that needs to be experienced in person to fully appreciate. They are famous for their well distributed 60 and 90 minute IPAs, but they have so many even more delicious craft brews available in their tasting room!
I’m pretty sure the sampler Leah and I shared was enough to give a modest buzz after only 4 2oz pours: each delectable beer we tasted was over 10% ABV, particularly dangerous since they tasted so good that A) you didn’t realize how potent they were, and B) you couldn’t help but order more! In our case, we actually did restrain ourselves from ordering full pours, and instead focused on tasting 12 of the amazingly delicious beverages. We left with 2 filled growlers for later, and a greater appreciation for beers that exist outside of our normally preferred West Coast beer haven.
